The Cathedral of St. Mary the Great, or Sé de Viana do Castelo, dominates the old town with its imposing twin towers and intricate stonework. Built between the 15th and 16th centuries, it blends Gothic structure with Renaissance ornamentation, including a magnificent portal carved with biblical scenes. Inside, the vaulted nave leads to a high altar adorned with gilded woodwork and a striking 18th-century organ. The adjoining cloister offers a peaceful retreat with views of the city rooftops. As the seat of the diocese, the cathedral remains an active place of worship, hosting regular masses and occasional classical concerts.
