The Synagogue of Tomar is a rare surviving medieval Jewish place of worship in Portugal, built in the 15th century before the expulsion of Jews from the country. It now houses the Abraham Zacuto Museum, dedicated to Jewish history and culture in Portugal. The small, austere stone building features a vaulted ceiling and a central bimah. Visitors can view artifacts, documents, and exhibits that tell the story of the once-thriving Jewish community in Tomar and their contributions to Portuguese science and exploration.

Don't miss

  • The original 15th-century stone bimah (reading platform) in the center
  • Exhibits on Abraham Zacuto, the Jewish astronomer who aided Portuguese explorers
  • A collection of Jewish ritual objects and medieval tombstones
