The Gilão River is the lifeblood of Tavira, flowing gently through the town and under the iconic Roman bridge that dates back to the 2nd century. Visitors can stroll along the riverbanks, where palm trees and flowering shrubs frame views of traditional houses and fishing boats. The bridge itself is a pedestrian-only thoroughfare, perfect for photos. Along the river, you'll find outdoor cafes, the municipal market, and the Jardim do Palácio garden. A boat trip offers a different perspective of the town's architecture and the Ria Formosa lagoon.
