The Battle of Sesimbra Bay took place in 1602, when a Dutch fleet under Admiral Jacob van Heemskerk attacked Spanish galleons anchored off the coast. Today, the bay's tranquil waters give no hint of the fierce engagement that occurred here. Visitors can gaze out from the seafront or take a boat trip to appreciate the strategic importance of this sheltered anchorage. Interpretive panels along the promenade provide context about the battle and its role in the Eighty Years' War.

Don't miss

  • Read the interpretive panels along the seafront detailing the battle.
  • Take a boat tour of the bay to envision the 1602 fleet positions.
  • Visit the nearby Fort São Sebastião for a defensive perspective.
