The Fortress of Sagres is a sprawling 15th-century fortification that once housed Prince Henry the Navigator's school of navigation. Though much of the original structure was lost in the 1755 earthquake, the remaining walls enclose a vast plateau with stunning coastal views. Visitors can walk the ramparts, see the famous wind compass (Rosa dos Ventos), and explore the small church and exhibition spaces. The fortress embodies the spirit of exploration that launched Portugal's global voyages.

Don't miss

  • Walk the fortress ramparts for dramatic views of the cliffs and ocean.
  • See the 43-meter-diameter wind compass (Rosa dos Ventos) etched into the ground.
  • Visit the small exhibition on Prince Henry the Navigator and the Age of Discoveries.
