São Bento Railway Station is one of Porto's most beautiful landmarks, celebrated for its stunning azulejo tile panels that depict scenes from Portuguese history. Located in the city center, the station was built on the site of a former Benedictine monastery and opened in 1916. The main atrium is a masterpiece of early 20th-century tilework, with over 20,000 hand-painted tiles created by artist Jorge Colaço. The panels illustrate key historical events, such as the Battle of Valdevez and the Conquest of Ceuta, as well as scenes of rural life and transportation. Beyond the tiles, the station's elegant Beaux-Arts architecture and bustling atmosphere make it a must-see. Even if you're not catching a train, it's worth stepping inside to admire the artistry.
