The Dom Luís I Bridge is one of Porto's most recognizable landmarks, a striking double-deck iron arch bridge that spans the Douro River. Designed by a disciple of Gustave Eiffel, it was inaugurated in 1886 and remains a vital transportation link. The lower deck carries road traffic and pedestrians, while the upper deck is reserved for the Porto Metro and pedestrians, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the river and the historic centers of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Walking across the upper deck is a must-do experience, especially at sunset when the city lights begin to twinkle. The bridge is also a popular spot for photography and a key part of the city's skyline.

Don't miss

  • Walk across the upper deck for stunning views of Porto and Gaia
  • Photograph the bridge from the Ribeira district or from a boat on the river
  • Ride the metro across the bridge for a unique perspective
  • Visit at sunset for golden hour photo opportunities
  • See the bridge illuminated at night
