Praça do Comércio is a vast, open square on the banks of the Tagus River, built after the 1755 earthquake. Its symmetrical yellow buildings and the equestrian statue of King José I create a striking setting. The Rua Augusta Arch, with its clock and statues, forms the gateway to the Baixa district. Visitors can relax at outdoor cafés, watch street performers, or take a ferry from the nearby pier.

Don't miss

  • Walk through the Rua Augusta Arch and admire its sculpted figures
  • See the equestrian statue of King José I at the square's center
  • Enjoy a coffee at one of the arcaded cafés with river views
