The Castle of Alvor sits on a hilltop in the historic village of Alvor, offering commanding views over the surrounding countryside and the Ria de Alvor estuary. Dating back to the Moorish period, the castle was an important defensive stronghold before being partially destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. Today, only remnants of its walls and towers remain, but the site provides a tangible link to the region's medieval past. Visitors can wander among the ruins, imagining the fortress in its heyday, while enjoying panoramic vistas of the estuary, salt pans, and the village below. The castle grounds are free to explore and are a peaceful spot for a picnic or a moment of reflection.
