Cabo de Santa Maria is the southernmost tip of continental Portugal, located on a narrow spit of sand near Faro. The site is dominated by a 19th-century lighthouse that still guides ships. Visitors come for the sense of being at the edge of Europe, with sweeping views of the Atlantic and the Ria Formosa. The surrounding area is a windswept landscape of dunes and salt flats, popular for birdwatching and photography. It's a quiet, contemplative spot, especially at sunset.
Don't miss
- Stand at the southernmost point of mainland Portugal and take in the endless ocean views.
- Photograph the iconic Cabo de Santa Maria lighthouse, a classic symbol of the Algarve coast.
- Watch for migratory birds in the surrounding salt pans and dunes, especially in spring and autumn.
