Perched on the Monte Brasil peninsula, the Fortress of São João Baptista is a colossal 16th-century fortification built to defend Angra do Heroísmo from pirate and enemy attacks. This sprawling complex, one of the largest of its kind in the Azores, features thick walls, bastions, and a moat.
