Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski) is the oldest part of Wrocław, a peaceful island on the Oder River that was the site of the city's original settlement. Dominated by the magnificent St. John the Baptist Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece with twin spires, the island is also home to several other historic churches, including the Romanesque Church of St. Giles. Visitors can stroll along cobblestone streets, admire the Bishop's Palace, and enjoy views of the river and city skyline. At dusk, the island is lit by gas lamps, adding a romantic, old-world charm. It's a serene escape from the bustling city center.

Don't miss

  • Climbing the cathedral's tower for panoramic views of Wrocław and the Oder River.
  • The Church of St. Giles, one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city, dating to the 13th century.
  • The evening gas lamp lighting ceremony, a tradition maintained by the island's lamplighter.
