The Andean Sanctuaries Museum is dedicated to preserving and displaying artifacts from Inca sacrificial ceremonies on the surrounding mountains. Its most famous exhibit is 'Juanita,' the remarkably preserved frozen mummy of a young Inca girl who was sacrificed on Mount Ampato around 500 years ago. The museum also showcases other mummies, textiles, ceramics, and gold and silver figurines found at high-altitude archaeological sites. Visitors learn about the Inca practice of capacocha, where children were offered to the gods, and the scientific research that has revealed details about their lives and deaths. The museum provides a powerful, educational experience about pre-Columbian Andean culture.
