Putucusi is a steep granite peak located across the Urubamba River from Aguas Calientes, offering one of the most challenging yet rewarding hikes in the region. The trail involves climbing nearly vertical ladders and scrambling over rocks, but those who make it to the summit are treated to a spectacular, unobstructed view of Machu Picchu from above. This less-crowded alternative to the classic Machu Picchu visit provides a unique perspective of the citadel nestled among the surrounding mountains. Hikers should be in good physical condition and prepared for a full morning of exertion.
Don't miss
- Climbing the series of nearly vertical ladders that scale the granite face
- Panoramic summit views of Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu, and the Urubamba River valley
- Observing the lush cloud forest ecosystem along the lower trail sections
