Inti Punku, meaning 'Sun Gate' in Quechua, is the iconic stone gateway that marks the official entrance to Machu Picchu for those completing the Inca Trail. Perched high on a ridge, it offers one of the most famous viewpoints of the citadel, especially at sunrise when the first rays of light illuminate the ancient ruins. While many visitors see it as the culmination of a multi-day trek, day visitors can also hike up from Machu Picchu in about an hour to experience the same sweeping vista. The site itself consists of a single well-preserved stone doorway set against a dramatic mountain backdrop.
Don't miss
- Watching the sunrise cast golden light over Machu Picchu from the gateway
- Seeing the final stretch of the Inca Trail as it descends toward the citadel
- Photographing the classic postcard view of Machu Picchu framed by the Sun Gate
