Huayna Picchu is the steep, iconic mountain that rises dramatically behind Machu Picchu, often featured in classic photographs of the citadel. The climb is a strenuous but rewarding experience, involving narrow stone steps and steep sections with cables for support. At the summit, visitors are treated to unparalleled panoramic views of the Machu Picchu ruins below and the winding Urubamba River far below. The trail also passes by the Temple of the Moon, a small cave-like structure with finely carved stonework. Due to its popularity, access is limited to two time slots per day, making advance booking essential.

Don't miss

  • The summit view offering a bird's-eye perspective of the entire Machu Picchu citadel
  • The Temple of the Moon, a sacred cave with intricate Inca masonry and niches
  • The steep Inca staircase, with sections carved directly into the cliff face
