Vulcan is a volcanic cone forming the western flank of Rabaul Caldera, which erupted violently in 1994 alongside Tavurvur, covering the town in ash. Today, it offers a challenging hike up its steep slopes, rewarding climbers with sweeping views of the caldera and Simpson Harbour. The trail passes through ash fields and sparse vegetation, with the summit providing a close-up look at the crater's vents. It's a quieter alternative to Tavurvur, ideal for those seeking solitude and a deeper understanding of the region's volcanic history.

Don't miss

  • Summit hike for panoramic caldera views
  • See the crater vents and ash deposits from the 1994 eruption
  • Spot unique volcanic rock formations along the trail
