Tavurvur is an active stratovolcano on the eastern rim of Rabaul Caldera, infamous for its devastating 1994 eruption that buried much of Rabaul in ash. Today, it draws adventurous visitors who hike its slopes to witness steaming vents, sulfur deposits, and panoramic views of Simpson Harbour. The experience is raw and dramatic, with constant reminders of the earth's power. Guided tours often include safety briefings due to volcanic activity, and the sight of the crater's plume against the blue sky is unforgettable.
