Fort Gulick is a decommissioned U.S. Army base located near Colón, best known for housing the infamous School of the Americas (now the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation). Established in the early 20th century to defend the Panama Canal, the base features abandoned barracks, parade grounds, and a network of roads now reclaimed by tropical vegetation. Visitors can explore the eerie remnants of the school’s classrooms and administrative buildings, as well as enjoy views of the Gatún Locks and the surrounding rainforest. It’s a poignant spot for history buffs and those interested in U.S.-Panama relations.
Don't miss
- Visit the former School of the Americas building, now a museum and memorial.
- Hike the overgrown trails to see abandoned bunkers and artillery positions.
- Look for wildlife like howler monkeys and toucans in the surrounding jungle.
