Samaria, the ancient capital of the northern Kingdom of Israel, sits on a hilltop northwest of Nablus. The site showcases the grandeur of the Israelite monarchy, including the remains of King Omri's palace and a massive casemate wall. Later, Herod the Great rebuilt the city as Sebaste, adding a temple, forum, and stadium. Visitors can walk through the acropolis, see the carved ivory inlays from the palace, and enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.
Don't miss
- The Israelite royal palace complex with its distinctive ashlar masonry.
- The Herodian temple platform dedicated to Augustus.
- The panoramic view from the acropolis over the Samarian hills.
