Nizwa Fort is one of Oman's most impressive and visited historic monuments, a massive 17th-century fortress dominating the old city of Nizwa, the former capital of the interior and a centre of Omani culture and learning. Its defining feature is an enormous circular tower, one of the largest in Oman, built to withstand cannon fire, which you climb via a series of defensive twists, false doors, and 'murder holes' (openings for pouring boiling date syrup on attackers). From the top, battlements offer sweeping views over Nizwa's date plantations, the old town, the great mosque's blue dome, and the dramatic Hajar Mountains beyond. Inside, restored rooms display Omani heritage, weapons, and daily life.

Right beside the fort is the famous Nizwa Souq, especially renowned for its lively Friday-morning livestock (goat) market, as well as silver, pottery, dates, and handicrafts. Together they make Nizwa an essential stop on any trip into Oman's interior. Allow a couple of hours; go early, especially on a Friday for the market.

A bit of history
