Tjugum Church, dating from around 1180, is a remarkably well-preserved Romanesque stone church that offers a glimpse into medieval Norwegian religious life. Its thick stone walls, small round-arched windows, and simple interior contrast with the more ornate wooden churches of the region. Inside, visitors can see fragments of medieval frescoes and a pulpit from the 1600s. The church is still in use, and its location on a hillside above the fjord provides sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. A visit here feels like stepping back centuries, away from the bustle of modern tourism.

Don't miss

  • Original 12th-century Romanesque stone construction with medieval fresco fragments
  • 17th-century wooden pulpit and historic interior fittings
  • Panoramic views of the Sognefjord from the churchyard
