The Stone Bridge is Skopje's most recognizable landmark, a sturdy Ottoman-era structure built in the 15th century under Sultan Mehmed II. Its 12 stone arches gracefully span the Vardar River, connecting the historic Old Bazaar on one bank with the modern Macedonia Square on the other. Walking across the bridge offers a tangible link between the city's Ottoman past and its present-day identity. The bridge has survived earthquakes and wars, including the devastating 1963 earthquake, and remains a symbol of Skopje's resilience. Visitors often pause here to photograph the river views and the surrounding architecture.

Don't miss

  • Walk the entire length of the bridge, noting the different arch sizes and stonework
  • Photograph the bridge from the riverbanks, especially at sunset when the stone glows golden
  • Observe the bridge's role as a bustling pedestrian thoroughfare connecting two distinct districts
