Mount Tauhara is a dormant volcanic cone rising 1,088 meters above Lake Taupō. The hike to the summit is a popular day walk, taking about 1.5 hours up through native forest and scrub. The trail is well-defined but steep in sections, with steps and roots. At the top, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views: the vast expanse of Lake Taupō, the Tongariro National Park volcanoes, and the Kaimanawa Ranges. The summit also has historical significance as a Māori pā site. It's a moderately challenging hike suitable for fit beginners, offering a sense of accomplishment and stunning scenery.
Don't miss
- Reach the summit trig point for unobstructed 360-degree views of Lake Taupō and Mount Ruapehu.
- Pause at the 'Saddle' viewpoint halfway up for a preview of the lake and mountains.
- Look for native birds like tūī and kererū along the forested lower slopes.
