Flagstaff Hill in Russell is a significant historic site where the British flagstaff was repeatedly cut down by Māori chief Hōne Heke in the 1840s, sparking the Flagstaff War. Today, visitors can walk up the hill for sweeping views of the Bay of Islands, Russell township, and the surrounding islands. Interpretive panels explain the events of the conflict. The hill is a short, steep climb but rewards with one of the best viewpoints in the region, making it a must-visit for history buffs and photographers alike.
