Mokoia Island is a protected wildlife sanctuary in the middle of Lake Rotorua, accessible only by boat. The island is a dormant volcanic crater with geothermal hot springs, including the famous Hinemoa's Pool, where you can soak in warm mineral waters. Walking trails wind through regenerating native forest, home to kiwi, takahe, and other rare birds. Guided tours share Maori legends, such as the love story of Hinemoa and Tutanekai.
