Built in 2013 as a temporary replacement for the earthquake-damaged ChristChurch Cathedral, the Cardboard Cathedral is a masterpiece of innovative design. Its A-frame structure uses 98 cardboard tubes coated with waterproof polyurethane, supported by timber beams. Inside, natural light filters through a stained-glass window made from triangular pieces. Visitors are struck by the serene, airy space and the symbolism of resilience. It hosts regular services and community events.

Don't miss

  • Marvel at the 98 cardboard tube columns that form the cathedral's main structure.
  • Admire the large stained-glass window, a modern reinterpretation of traditional church windows.
  • Attend a service or concert to experience the excellent acoustics of this unique space.
