Lake Huka was a large lake that once filled the Taupō region but drained catastrophically around 25,000 years ago, likely due to the Oruanui eruption. Today, the area is part of the Wairakei geothermal field, where visitors can witness the aftermath of this ancient event. The landscape features steaming fumaroles, bubbling mud pools, and striking silica terraces formed by mineral-rich hot springs. Walking trails lead through the geothermal area, offering close-up views of the colorful deposits and steam vents. This site provides a fascinating glimpse into the region's violent geological history and ongoing geothermal activity.
