The New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute is located within the Whakarewarewa geothermal valley and serves as a living workshop for traditional Māori arts. Visitors can observe skilled carvers working on intricate wood and pounamu (greenstone) pieces, and weavers creating flax garments and baskets. The institute was established to preserve and revive these ancient crafts, and the artists are often happy to explain their techniques and the cultural significance behind their work.
