Flagstaff Hill in Russell is a significant historic site where Māori chief Hone Heke repeatedly cut down the British flagstaff in the 1840s, sparking the Flagstaff War. Today, the hill is a peaceful reserve offering panoramic views of the Bay of Islands, including Russell, Waitangi, and the surrounding islands. Visitors can walk to the summit along a short, steep path and see the reconstructed flagstaff. Interpretive panels explain the history, and the site is a popular spot for photography and picnics.

- Walk to the summit for sweeping views of the Bay of Islands.
- See the reconstructed flagstaff and read interpretive panels about Hone Heke's actions.
- Enjoy a picnic with a view at the reserve.
