The Hooker Valley Track is one of New Zealand's most popular short hikes, offering an accessible way to experience the grandeur of Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park. The 10-kilometer (round trip) trail winds through glacial valleys, across swing bridges, and past alpine tarns, culminating at Hooker Lake with icebergs and a direct view of the mountain. The path is mostly flat and well-graded, making it suitable for most fitness levels. Along the way, interpretive signs explain the geology and plant life, and the ever-changing light on the peaks provides constant photo opportunities.

Don't miss

  • Cross three swing bridges over glacier-fed streams with mountain backdrops.
  • Reach Hooker Lake for icebergs and reflections of Mount Cook.
  • Spot alpine flowers like Mount Cook buttercups in summer.
