Hooker Lake is the stunning terminus of the Hooker Valley Track, one of New Zealand's most famous day hikes. The lake is fed by the Hooker Glacier and often contains floating icebergs calved from the glacier face. Visitors can walk right to the lake's edge, where the view of Aoraki/Mount Cook towering above is unparalleled. The track crosses three swing bridges and offers constantly changing perspectives of the mountain, glaciers, and alpine meadows. The lake's milky turquoise color comes from glacial silt, and on still days the reflections are breathtaking.

Don't miss

  • Close-up views of Aoraki/Mount Cook from the lake shore
  • Floating icebergs in the lake, especially in warmer months
  • Crossing the three swing bridges along the Hooker Valley Track
