A bit of history

Ernest Rutherford studied at Canterbury College from 1890 to 1894, earning degrees in mathematics and physics. The building that now houses Rutherford's Den was originally the college's physics laboratory. Rutherford later won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908 for his work on radioactive decay.
