Maungawhau / Mount Eden is one of Auckland's most iconic volcanic cones, rising 196 metres above the city. The summit provides a sweeping 360-degree panorama of the Auckland region, from the Hauraki Gulf to the Waitakere Ranges. A short, steep walk leads to the rim, where visitors can peer into the large, grassy crater, a sacred site to Māori. The cone is also dotted with historic terraces and pits from pre-European settlement. It's a favourite spot for sunrise or sunset visits, offering a quiet escape in the heart of the city.
