The Sassenpoort is a striking medieval gate that once formed part of Zwolle's city walls. Built in the early 15th century, it is one of the few remaining gates of the original fortifications and a testament to the city's wealth during the Hanseatic League. The gate features a tall, narrow structure with a pointed arch, flanked by two round towers with conical roofs. Visitors can admire the gate from the outside, but it is also possible to climb to the top for a panoramic view of the old town. The interior houses a small exhibition on the history of the gate and Zwolle's defensive works. The Sassenpoort is especially photogenic at sunset when the warm light illuminates the brickwork. It stands at the end of the Sassenstraat, one of Zwolle's oldest streets, and is a popular meeting point for walking tours.
