HNLMS Abraham Crijnssen is a historic minesweeper built in 1936, famous for its daring escape from the Japanese invasion of Java in 1942, camouflaged as a tropical island. Today, it is preserved as a museum ship at the Marinemuseum in Den Helder, easily reachable from Texel. Visitors can walk the decks, explore the bridge, and see the crew quarters, engine room, and mine-laying equipment. The ship retains much of its original appearance, offering a tangible connection to World War II naval history. What makes this visit special is the story of its escape, the crew covered the ship with foliage to look like an island, a tale brought to life through exhibits and the ship's preserved camouflage paint. You'll also see how minesweepers operated, with interactive displays on mine warfare.
