The Grave with the Hands (Graf met de Handjes) is one of Roermond's most unusual and touching monuments, located in the city's historic cemetery. The grave features a striking sculpture of two hands clasped in a handshake emerging from the earth, symbolizing an unbreakable bond beyond death. This monument marks the final resting place of a married couple from different religious backgrounds, Catholic and Protestant, who were buried in separate sections of the cemetery due to 19th-century segregation. The hands reach over the dividing wall, representing their eternal love. Visitors can see the actual handshake sculpture, made of bronze, and the low wall that once separated the faiths. The grave is a powerful symbol of unity and a popular photo spot, offering a glimpse into Roermond's social history.
