Westerlichttoren is a striking red-and-white striped lighthouse located on the coast near Renesse, in the village of Westerschouwen. Built in 1840, it stands 58 meters tall and is one of the most iconic landmarks in Zeeland. Visitors can climb the 186 steps to the top for a breathtaking 360-degree view of the North Sea, the Brouwersdam, the Grevelingenmeer, and the expansive dune landscape. The lighthouse is still operational, guiding ships with its light visible up to 30 nautical miles. What makes it distinctive is its location within the Kop van Schouwen nature reserve, a protected area of dunes and forests. The surrounding area is perfect for hiking and birdwatching. You'll see the lighthouse's distinctive stripes from miles away, and the climb rewards you with a perspective that captures the region's unique geography, land and water intertwined. The small museum at the base provides context on the lighthouse's history and maritime significance.
