Waterland

Waterland is a protected nature reserve and polder landscape that stretches across the region north of Amsterdam, including areas around Marken. It is a quintessentially Dutch scene of flat, green meadows crisscrossed by drainage ditches, dotted with windmills, and inhabited by countless birds. The area is a paradise for cyclists and hikers, with a network of paths along dikes and through farmlands. Birdwatchers flock here to spot species like black-tailed godwits, lapwings, and spoonbills, especially during the spring breeding season. The landscape is punctuated by small villages like Katwoude and Uitdam, and the historic city of Monnickendam. What makes Waterland distinctive is its unspoiled character, much of it is below sea level, reclaimed from the sea, and maintained by traditional water management. Visitors can experience the vastness of the sky and the quiet hum of nature, a stark contrast to the urban bustle of nearby Amsterdam. The reserve is also home to several dairy farms where you can sample local cheese.
