Onze Lieve Vrouweplein (Our Lady's Square) is one of Maastricht's most beloved public spaces, dominated by the imposing Basilica of Our Lady (Onze Lieve Vrouwebasiliek). The square is a picturesque blend of medieval architecture and modern café culture, with terraces spilling out onto the cobblestones. The basilica, with its distinctive westwork and Romanesque tower, dates back to the 11th century and houses a revered statue of the Virgin Mary, the 'Star of the Sea.' The square buzzes with energy day and night, locals and tourists alike gather here for coffee, meals, or simply to soak in the atmosphere. Surrounding buildings include historic merchants' houses and the former city wall. It's a perfect starting point for exploring Maastricht's old town, with the Vrijthof and other sights just a short walk away.
