Fort Ében-Émael is a colossal underground fortress built in the 1930s to defend Belgium's eastern border. Located about 10 km from Maastricht, it was considered impregnable until a daring German glider assault on May 10, 1940 captured it in hours. Today, the fort is a museum and memorial. Visitors can explore over 4 km of tunnels, see original gun turrets, ammunition stores, and living quarters. Guided tours take you deep underground, where you'll learn about the fort's design, the battle, and the soldiers who served. The sheer scale is awe-inspiring – you'll walk through chambers carved into the rock, past massive artillery pieces. The tour includes a film and a visit to the memorial for the fallen.
