The Dinghuis is one of Maastricht's most iconic medieval buildings, easily recognized by its distinctive stepped gable and ornate facade. Originally built in the 13th century, it served as a courthouse and later a prison. Today, it houses the city's main tourist information office, making it a perfect first stop for visitors. Inside, you'll find helpful staff, maps, and brochures, as well as a small exhibition on the building's history. The exterior is a favorite photo spot, especially when the sun highlights the intricate brickwork and Gothic windows. Its location on the lively Grote Staat shopping street means you can easily combine a visit with exploring the surrounding historic center.

Don't miss

  • Pick up maps and local tips at the tourist information desk
  • Photograph the building from the Grote Staat for the best angle
  • Notice the iron hooks on the facade, once used for displaying criminals
