The Van Brienenoord Bridge is a major bascule (drawbridge) that carries the A16 motorway over the Nieuwe Maas river, connecting Rotterdam with the Alblasserwaard region. It is one of the busiest bridges in the country, with over 250,000 vehicles crossing daily. The bridge consists of two parallel bascule bridges, each with a lifting span that opens for river traffic. While not a tourist attraction in itself, it is an impressive feat of engineering and a vital transport link. Pedestrians and cyclists can use the separate paths on either side to cross and enjoy views of the river and the city skyline. The bridge is illuminated at night, creating a striking sight. Nearby, the Van Brienenoordpark offers green space and a marina.
