Roode Steen is the vibrant heart of Hoorn, a lively square that has been the city's focal point for centuries. The name 'Roode Steen' (Red Stone) refers to the red paving stones that once marked the site of the former town hall. Today, the square is a bustling gathering place, lined with terraced cafes, restaurants, and historic buildings with ornate gables. At its center stands the imposing statue of Jan Pieterszoon Coen, a controversial figure who was a governor-general of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and a native of Hoorn. The statue, erected in 1893, depicts Coen in a commanding pose. Around the square, you'll find the former weigh house (Waag) and the late Gothic-style Oosterkerk. The atmosphere is lively, especially on market days (Wednesdays and Saturdays) when stalls fill the square with fresh produce, flowers, and local goods. Roode Steen is the perfect spot to sit with a coffee, watch people, and soak in the historic ambiance.
