Teylers Museum, founded in 1778, is a treasure trove of art, fossils, minerals, and scientific instruments. As you step inside, you'll be transported to the Age of Enlightenment, with its original neoclassical Oval Room housing a central display case of minerals and a 19th-century fossil collection. The museum's art collection includes works by Michelangelo, Rembrandt, and the Dutch Romantics, while the science wing features historic electrical machines and a 1784 'Eidophusikon' (a moving picture show). The experience is intimate and scholarly, with dim lighting and wooden cabinets evoking a classic cabinet of curiosities. Located along the Spaarne River, the museum's courtyard café offers a peaceful break. What makes it distinctive is its unbroken continuity as a public museum, preserving its original purpose of inspiring curiosity and learning.
