Gouda's historic center is a charming area of cobblestone streets, gabled buildings, and tranquil canals. The centerpiece is the Markt square, dominated by the 15th-century Gothic town hall (Stadhuis) with its striking red shutters and carillon. Every Thursday morning from April to August, the famous cheese market takes place here, a colorful reenactment of traditional cheese trading. Nearby, the Waag (weigh house) and the Sint Janskerk add to the medieval atmosphere. Visitors can stroll along the canals lined with historic houses, stop at a café on the Markt, or explore the many shops and museums. The area is compact and walkable, perfect for a day trip.
