The Koepelgevangenis, or Dome Prison, is one of the Netherlands' most distinctive penal landmarks. Completed in 1886, its innovative circular design allowed a single guard to observe all cell wings from a central point. Today, it stands as a national monument, and while still a functioning prison for part of the year, it opens its doors to the public on select days for guided tours. Visitors can explore the central rotunda, see the original cell doors, and learn about the prison's history and daily life of inmates. The stark, imposing interior contrasts with the peaceful surrounding park, making it a thought-provoking stop in Breda.
