Steenbergen, a charming fortified town northeast of Bergen op Zoom, offers a delightful mix of history and small-town Dutch life. The heart of the town is the market square, lined with cafes and historic buildings, where a weekly market takes place. Dominating the skyline is the 'De Onvermoeide' windmill, a working grain mill that dates back to the 18th century and is open for tours. The Museum Steenbergen, housed in a former town hall, tells the story of the region through artifacts, paintings, and exhibits on the town's role in the Eighty Years' War. Strolling the streets, you'll encounter remnants of the old fortifications, including a few gates and bastions. Steenbergen feels lived-in and authentic, less touristy than larger cities, making it a pleasant stop for a few hours of exploration.
