Hoogerheide, a quaint village just south of Bergen op Zoom, is best known as a mecca for cyclo-cross enthusiasts. Every few years, the world's top cyclists converge here for the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships, racing through mud, sand, and grass on a purpose-built course that winds through the village and surrounding farmland. Even outside of championship years, the course is open to the public, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to walk or cycle the same terrain as the pros. The village itself is quiet and residential, with a few local shops and cafes. The atmosphere during race events is electric, with crowds lining the barriers and a festive village center. For cycling fans, Hoogerheide is a pilgrimage site; for others, it's a chance to experience a slice of Dutch sporting culture in a peaceful rural setting.
