Fort de Roovere is a well-preserved 17th-century fortress located just outside Bergen op Zoom. It was part of the West Brabant Water Line, a defensive system that used inundation to protect the region. Today, the fort is a peaceful nature area with wide moats, grassy ramparts, and wooded paths. Visitors can walk along the fortifications, cross the iconic Moses Bridge (a sunken bridge that parts the water), and explore the underground casemates. The site offers a unique blend of history and outdoor recreation, with plenty of space for picnics and birdwatching. The fort's isolation makes it feel like a hidden gem, perfect for a quiet afternoon stroll.

Don't miss

  • Walk across the Moses Bridge, a submerged bridge that allows you to cross the moat at water level.
  • Explore the earthen ramparts and bastions for panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
  • Visit the casemates (underground chambers) to see how soldiers lived and worked.
  • Enjoy birdwatching from the moat edges, look for herons and waterfowl.
  • Follow the marked walking trails that loop around the fort and through the adjacent forest.
